The US Open kicks off Monday, bringing tennis stars from across the globe to Queens for two weeks of thrilling matches. Whether you’re looking to see Venus Williams reclaim her crown at 45 years old or witness the next rising star, there are plenty of reasons to get excited for the tournament.
A new format brings more matches to the US Open this year. It’s now contested over 15 days instead of 14, and it begins on a Sunday rather than a Monday, like the French and Australian Opens. There will also be an expanded video review system, so all 17 competition courts will have the technology to handle reviews of certain plays (like double bounces).
One of the best things about the US Open is that it’s free for most fans. You can watch qualifying matches, which start Aug. 18, as well as family activities and free concerts at Flushing Meadows throughout Fan Week, which runs until the main draw begins Aug. 24. All you need is a ticket to enter the grounds, and you can bring in reusable water bottles of up to 24 ounces (no glass).
The US Open also offers plenty of food options. You’ll find classic sports-event snacks, including hot dogs and burgers, as well as gourmet fare like ice cream from Van Leeuwen and pizza from San Matteo. There’s even a food court outside Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong Stadiums that features some of the city’s top restaurants, like COQODAQ from Simon Kim.
